Term 1 · Week 8 · Parent reading companion
A Place to Hang the Moon · Chapters 6–8

Reading for the week: chapters 6–8. Print this week’s handout.
Read & Talk
Beside the book · open a row when you need it
1 · RememberWhere did we leave off?
Before opening the book, let each child recall one detail from the last reading.
2 · Read TogetherThis week’s chapters, in your own rhythm
Read aloud, take turns, or let them read independently. Notice how the children feel in the library compared with elsewhere.
3 · Help Your Child NarrateOral telling first; writing afterward
Close the book and ask, “Tell me what you remember.” Listen without interrupting. If your child pauses, “What happened next?” is enough.
When it is time to write the week’s connection, let them talk it through first. What they say aloud may be fuller than what they can put on paper.
4 · Talk · QuestionsUse after oral narration, if helpful
These are conversation starters. The handout asks for one written connection.
- Why do the children like Mrs. Müller’s library?
- What does Mrs. Müller do that makes the children feel welcome?
- What does each child’s choice of book reveal about them?
Handout & Language Support
Answers and guidance for the written work
Check Little LanguageTry the handout first, then compare
William, Edmund, and Anna walked to the village library.
Mrs. Müller welcomed the children.
The children watched Pinocchio.
Anna and Mrs. Müller discussed orphan stories.
Prepare for DictationStudy the passage before writing
Read the passage together. Notice its capitals, punctuation, and unfamiliar spellings. Cover it, then invite your child to write it from your slow reading during Session Two.
Words Worth KnowingChoose and explore a word from the reading
The handout models bibliophile. Choose another word that catches your child’s attention. Look up its dictionary meaning (denotation); ask what feeling it carries here (connotation); then reread the sentence and wonder why the author chose that word.
Keep Your WorkWeekly response, dictation, and One Keep
Read the handout together, notice one thing your child did well, and keep it in your family’s binder or portfolio.

Art, music, nature, and a connection to explore
Art, music, nature & connectionsChoose a path that interests your family
Follow one path that interests your family. Nothing below adds another written response.
Art · Look closely
Return to Autumn Leaves above. Notice the girls, the light, and the mood. You can enjoy the painting without making it stand for an event in the novel.
Music · Listen
Ralph Vaughan Williams · The Lark Ascending
The same piece throughout the term. Return to it when you like.Nature · Go outside
Notice one living thing or a change in the weather for a few minutes.
Open the term’s nature pages →Relations Study · What makes a place welcoming?
Visit a library if you can, or spend a few minutes at a familiar bookshelf. Notice one small thing that helps a reader feel welcome: a person, a place to sit, or a book within reach. Talk about how it connects to Mrs. Müller’s library. Your child can use this for the connection already on the handout; there is no extra response.
